This project involved designing a richly detailed fantasy book cover for The Knights of Yawgoog by Paul Golden. The objective was to create an immersive, story-driven visual that reflects themes of adventure, exploration, and medieval mystery while appealing to fantasy readers.
The cover needed to evoke a sense of discovery and nostalgia, capturing the essence of a quest-based narrative through strong environmental storytelling and a timeless aesthetic suitable for both print and digital platforms.
Execution Process
- Brand Discovery:
Analyzed the narrative direction centered around medieval adventure, exploration, and hidden knowledge. Positioned the design within the fantasy genre, ensuring it aligns with reader expectations while maintaining a distinctive identity.
- Layout & Typography:
Developed a classic serif typographic system inspired by historical manuscripts and fantasy literature. Carefully structured the hierarchy to emphasize the title while maintaining balance with the author name and visual elements.
- Visual Strategy:
Created a warm, cinematic composition featuring an aged map book, candlelight, and tactile objects to build an authentic medieval atmosphere. Used textures, lighting, and depth to enhance realism and draw the viewer into the scene.
The open map acts as a narrative focal point, symbolizing journey, mystery, and discovery, reinforcing the core theme of the story.
- Production:
Delivered a high-resolution, print-ready cover optimized for paperback and digital marketplaces. Ensured accurate color grading, bleed setup, and detail clarity to maintain quality across all formats and viewing sizes.
