This project involved designing a vibrant and narrative-driven book cover for the romantic fiction novel Happily Never Afterlife by Jessica Marrone. The goal was to create a visually engaging cover that blends romance, humor, and a supernatural twist — capturing the story’s tone at first glance.
The concept centers around an imaginative afterlife setting, where love, loss, and unexpected connections unfold beyond reality. The design needed to feel playful yet emotional, combining soft illustrative storytelling with bold typography to appeal to a contemporary fiction audience.
Execution Process
- Brand Discovery:
Analyzed the book’s tone — a mix of romance, comedy, and afterlife fantasy — to establish a visual direction that feels lighthearted but meaningful. Identified key storytelling elements such as love beyond death, character contrast, and whimsical emotional moments.
- Layout & Typography:
Developed a strong typographic hierarchy with a large, bold serif title to anchor the design. Balanced the composition by positioning illustrated characters within and around the typography, ensuring readability while maintaining narrative flow.
- Visual Strategy:
Created a warm gradient sky transitioning from sunset tones to soft clouds, symbolizing the afterlife setting. Incorporated illustrated characters — including a haloed female figure, a grounded male counterpart, and a small dog — to reflect personality, humor, and emotional depth.
Added subtle details such as stars, halos, and handwritten-style text elements to enhance the playful yet heartfelt tone.
- Production:
Delivered a high-resolution, print-ready book cover optimized for physical publishing and digital storefronts. The design was tested across mockups to ensure strong visual impact in both thumbnail and full-size formats.
